Welcome!

Vecinas de El Salvador works to maintain an ongoing relationship with the people of El Salvador through our sister parish of San Antonio, Soyapango. We strive to share ideas, grow, and work together to achieve solidarity across borders and generations. We build community through friendships that celebrate our commonality and diversity. We increase our understanding of one another's lives through education, prayer and community projects. We help one another when the need arises.

Welcome to our new web site. We hope that it will become a useful resource for the SI El Salvador project team, members of St Ignatius parish, and other people interested in El Salvador and our project. Please continue to visit.

Read what Matthew Bradshaw, Oliver Gonzalez-Yoakum, James Reily and Emily Warren have to say about their experiences. Also available on-line are reflections by Jonathan Dimmock who participated in the 2002 trip, and Julia Dowd and Mark Bradshaw who comment on some general aspects of the Las Vecinas project and the relationship with our sister parish in Soyapango.

The DECEMBER TRIP to El Salvador was a great success. From December 7-11, 2001, six members of SI parish (Fr. Gagan, Joan Gallagher, Cindy Yoakum, Elena Amaya, Chris Weasler, Mark Bradshaw and Matthew Bradshaw) visited our friends in San Antonio Parish, Soyapango. The group was accompanied by Jose Artiga, Tilo Artiga and Jeremy Rhoades from the Romero Foundation. During this time the group participated in an event to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the massacre at El Mozote, attended a sister parish covenant signing celebration at the parish and visited the tomb of Romero and the University of Central America. On December 11, Mark, Matthew, Chris and Jeremy travelled to the rural parish of El Carmen and spent the rest of the week staying with the Ramirez family, learning more about life in rural El Salvador and helping with the housing reconstruction project. PHOTOS and a TRIP REPORT will be posted here very shortly. Please check back in a couple of days.
